METHOD OF STREETSCAPE ZONING BY KANSEI ENGINEERING AND SELF ORGANIZING MAPS
In this study, Kansei engineering is applied to the streetscape analysis of the historical town. Chofu area in Shimonoseki city was taken up as an example of the analysis, and the appearance of the street is evaluated based on an actual photograph using traditional semantic differential method. A guideline for streetscaping plan is common in such historical towns. When the guidelines especially public ones are established in an area, situations of the region confronting different positions, such as residents, tourist agents or businesspersons, should be reflect the views of the entire community. When building the plan it is a necessary to unify the concept and the image of the streetscape in the community. However, an issue sometimes comes up in such area where the criteria for the streetscaping are not unified in the community. The principal concept of Image held in streetscape and image of the points of the street must be unified in advance. Kansei engineering experiment is therefore taken for analysing streetscape images. The results of the analysis are going to transform to landscape image maps, then the streetscape elements of the observation points are considered. This illustration demonstrates Kohonens Self Organizing Map(SOM) to analyse the evaluated Kansei data. The SOM has been used as an alternative analytical method replace factor analysis or PCA in the recent Kansei engineering studies. This study attempts to analyse by general SOM map approach to illustrate the streetscape zoning as an actual example.
