PLACTICALITY OF THE RFID FOR ITEM CHECK OPERATIONS IN A DISTRIBUTION CENTER
This research shows a case study to verify possibility of RFID for support operations in the distribution center dealing consumer goods. Main operations of this facility are picking items from storage space, value added processing (assortment) and packing. Barcode readers have. been used to check items throughout main operations for ensuring higher operational efficiency and accuracy. However, work time to check items by barcode readers increase conspicuously in proportion to the total volume of items. Therefore, the RFID has received attention as an alternative device to revise warehousing operations, since it does not require any work time to check and confirm items. Therefore, a case study was carried out to evaluate the possibilities of actual use of RFID for warehousing operations. First, main operations in an actual distribution center using barcode readers were analyzed by the work measurement method. A simulation was executed to estimate effects of RFID on the improvement of operational efficiency based on the result of the work measurement. Then, layout of the work area in this facility was redesigned to set up a RFID system for checking items. Then, a test operation was carried out to verify the actual effects of the system. Throughout this case study, possibility of the RFID for the actual warehousing operations is discussed.
