PHOTO-INDUCED IN SITU FORMING HYDROGELS BASED ON COLLAGEN AND A BIOCOMPATIBLE MACROMOLECULAR PHOTOINITIATOR
A novel cytocompatible macrophotoinitiator based on benzophenone functionalized dextran was prepared. After collagen/macrophotoinitiator mixed aqueous solutions were exposed to UVA radiation, collagen/dextran hybrid hydrogels formed in situ. The photocrosslinked hybrid gels showed higher tensile strength and elastic modulus compared to photocrosslinked collagen gels. The hybrid hydrogels supported attachment and proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells. Due to their biocompatibility, the collagen and dextran based in situ forming hydrogels may have potential applications in drug delivery and tissue engineering.
