DEVELOPMENT OF BIOCOMPATIBLE SILICONE HYROGELS WITH HIGH RESISTANCE TO PROTEIN ADSORPTION AND BACTERIAL, ADHESION
A biocompatible silicone hydrogel comprising of carboxybetaine ester monomer, 3-methacryloxypropyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane (TRIS), and an organic silicone macromer was prepared through photo-polymerization. High resistance to protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion is achieved after surface hydrolysis of this silicone hydrogel, while the optical and mechanical properties of the modified silicone hydrogel are still comparable with the silicone hydrogel without carboxybetaine ester groups. It is believed that this low fouling silicone hydrogel could be a candidate for preparing contact lenses with capability of sustained-release of drugs.
