Framework for Active Control of Rotating Stall and Surge in Aero-Engine

Rotating stall and surge, adopted as two common instability phenomena in compressor, reduce the thrust and efficiency of aero-engine, even threaten the security of engine and aircraft. Traditionally, engine is designed to operate under a large surge margin to avoid instability. However, the conservative surge margin sacrifice the performance of the engine greatly. Alternatively, the active control technology allows engine works at high efficiency region in characteristic map of compressor. Numerous researches in active control of rotating stall and surge on component level has been completed in laboratory during the last few decades, which verified the benefits and probability of active control. And the research of implement of active control in real aero-engine has been addressed nowadays. This paper presents a framework for active control of rotating stall and surge in aero-engine, which contains the structure of active control system and key technologies of each module of the system. Three major non-technical factors of the framework are discussed: Firstly, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to implement active control in aero-engine; Secondly, active control is not just an engineering problem, but also a management problem; Last but not least, an overall database is needed not only for collaboration, but also for management.
