A Method of Separation for Captive on Top Air Launch

Captive on top air launch has got a high recognition because it can carry a large volume rocket on top of carrier aircraft To improve the separation safety of captive on top air launch, a method of attaching an expendable wing to the air-launched rocket to separate the rocket from carried aircraft is presented in this paper. The basic concept of this method is adding a large wing to the rocket, and using the extra lift generated by the additional wing to separate the rocket from carried aircraft when the carried aircraft flies in steady level flight. Firstly, the additional wing is designed: a supercritical airfoil and trapezoidal wing geometry is selected, primary parameters are determined, and the wings aerodynamic characteristics is analyzed. Secondly, the numerical simulation of the separation is processed by using the sophisticated CFD software. Numerical simulations result indicated that by means of attaching a specific wing to rocket, the rockets posture in the separation process is steady, and the rocket wont collide with the carrier aircraft, and the safety of the separation can be assured.
