Aerodynamic Characteristics of Space Wing
We measured aerodynamic characteristics of a Space Wing, which consists of three square plates arranged along the spaa The parameter of the Space Wing was a distance between the square plates along the span. The ratio of the distance to chord length was between 0.2 and 0.9. For comparison, we also measured aerodynamic characteristics of two rectangular wings without spaces. Aspect ratio of the two wings are 1 and 3. The aerodynamic characteristics of the Space Wing are close to those of the wing with aspect ratio of 3 when the relation between lift coefficient and an angle of attack is linear. On the other hand, they are close to those of the wing with aspect ratio of 1 when the lift coefficient is maximum. Referring to the characteristics stated above, we have newly proposed a concept of Variable Space Wing, which is one Space Wing where the space can be varied. According to flight condition and gust condition, the width of spaces is varied to maximize flight performance.
