Aerodynamic Characteristics of Cylindrical Wing

This paper presents a study about Cylindrical Wing, which is a really unique type of wing having a cylindrical shape as its name suggests. The both wing tips, which terminate at both ends laterally and shed tip vortices in a conventional airplane, attach together making a ring without distinct wing tips. The notable feature of this wing is the marked flying stability. You can experience it easily by making a cylinder with a triangular paper connecting two corners together to make a ring and flying it with an appropriately adjusted CG position. It can fly well with both longitudinal and lateral stability. So, this study aims to clarify aerodynamic characteristics of cylindrical wing with wing section from experimental viewpoint by conducting the wind tunnel test. The six force components (Lift, Drag, Side force, Pitching moment, Rolling moment, and Yawing moment) are measured in this wind tunnel test The results show that the large stall angle and the gentle stall characteristics of cylindrical wing compared to the flat plate wing with the same planform as the unfolded cylindrical wing. Moreover, cylindrical wing has the static stability of pitching, rolling, and yawing motion, indicating the ability of stable flight without tail fins.
