Numerical Simulation of Ice Accretion on Airfoil Based on Spring Analogy

A numerical simulation approach is presented to simulate the ice accretion on airfoil which can deal with the ice accretion under various atmospheric conditions. This paper uses the integral form of Navier-Stokes equation and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model to calculate the ice accretion. Besides, the method we used is based on spring analogy. Basing on spring analogy, this approach was carried out to simulate the ice accretion on the NACA 0012 airfoil under different atmospheric conditions. This paper used the Lagrange methods to establish the droplet trajectory equation with some fundamental assumptions. In additional, this paper makes further research in the conversation of ice mass and energy to improve our model. The comparison between the results of this paper and the experimental data as well as other icing codes indicates that the current approach is applicable and effective.
