The Effect of Icing on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Main Wing Section of the KG 100 Aircraft

Icing accumulated on the external surface of an aircraft may cause a change in the external shape and can affect aerodynamic characteristics and aircraft safety. The provision related an aircraft operation safety is specified on FAR Part 23 Section 1419, Advisory Circular 135-9 and 91-51A and is included in the certification process. The aircraft must be proven by the combination of the analysis and the flight test that can safely operate within icing flight envelope (flight during maximum 45minutes in icing conditions) specified under FAR Part 25 Appendix C. FENSAP-ICE was applied in order to predict ice accretion on KC-100 aircraft and the main wings wing shape during flap-up and flap-down. Representative rime icing conditions and glaze icing conditions were selected for the ice zone of FAR 25 Appendix C, and an analysis was performed. The aerodynamic influence on the predicted shape was analyzed, while proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was used for efficient computation to predict ice shape.
