Development of Software-based Spacecraft Simulator for LEO Flight Software Development & Verification
The role and importance of the on-board flight software (FSW) is continuously increasing according to the satellite mission depending on the complexity and configuration. For many years the development and verification of the FSW have been essentially performed on the STB (Software Test Bed) environments which consist of real hardware in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). During the development of the FSW on the STB, we experienced many difficulties such as the late delivery of target hardware and limitation to access the STB simultaneously by multiple users, and it takes too much time and cost to build up multiple STBs for different satellites. In order to resolve these problems successfully, the software-based spacecraft simulator has been developed since the beginning of the satellite program. The KOMPSAT Flight Software Simulator (FSS) emulates the OBC, I/O modules and power control and distribution unit (PCDU) and it support the debugging and test facilities to software engineers, and the FSW can be loaded without any modification and can be executed as pseudo real-time. The unit test, integration test and verification test of the FSW was performed on the KOMPSAT FSS, and the test result is exactly the same as the result from real hardware such as ETB and FM. Also the KOMPSAT FSS will be used for ground operation training, LEOP operation and FSW maintenance after launch.
