Widespread Corrosion Damage Assessment Approach of Aircraft

In order to quantitatively assess the residual strength of the aging aircraft with widespread corrosion damage, the Equivalent Crack Size technique is used to equivalent the surface corrosion pits into initial surface cracks on corrosion structure, and the analysis to the corrosion structure with lots of pits becomes a multiple surface cracks problem which can be solved using fracture mechanics approach. The parameter finite element method, which based on Equivalent Crack Size technique, is used to compute multiple equivalent surface cracks stress intensity factor, crack extension directions, and crack-growth increments, When the stress intensity factor history is set up using the crack-growth increment and stress intensity factors, then the fatigue life of the corrosion structure under fatigue load is estimated through cycle-by-cycle damage accumulation. With this method, an edge corrosion damage of the front beam of a fighter plane is evaluated. The result provides a theoretical reference for fatigue life prediction of an aircraft structure with widespread corrosion damage in complicated environments.
