Contrast Studies of Compression after Impact of Two Material Systems

The compression after impact (CAI) test has become a key experiment to gather damage tolerance performance data during the design or certification phase of composites. As two important material systems, it is necessary to study the CAI performance of CCF300/BA9916 and CCF300/BA9916-Ⅱand the function of toughened resin. The results of impact event show that indentation of the latter is even deeper than the former at the same impact energy which is less than 20J,but indentation depth of the latter is just approximate to half of the former when the impact energy is greater than 20J. The results of compression show that the residual compressive strength of theCCF300/BA9916-Ⅱ exceeds about 20% of that of the CCF300/BA9916 when the impact energy or indentation depth of the specimens is nearly the same. The normalized compressive strength of the latter is still greater than that of the former. The paper compared two resin matrix (BA9916 and BA9916-Ⅱ) and found that toughened resin matrix BA9916-Ⅱ can increase impact resistance and damage tolerance.
