One Approach for Improvement of FMEA in Risk Analysis and Design Optimization
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a methodology for analysis of potential failure modes within a product which evaluates the risk level of failure modes by Risk Priority Number (RPN) and then proposes compensating provision. This paper seeks to address the drawbacksof the calculation of RPN index in traditional FMEA. The Enhanced Risk Priority Number (ERPN) is proposed to prioritize failure modes when two or more failure modes have the same RPN or when there is a disagreement in ranking scale for severity, occurrence and detection. In this paper, A new Fault Management architecture is introduced to provide clear, straight forward and meaningful results that can even be convenient for designers, the relationships between each element of the architecture and how to effectively connect them to observe their power is described in this paper. The new FMEA approach which combined FMEA with Fault Insertion Testing (FIT) and how FIT enables design engineers and all interested parties to observe if the product is performing as expected is discussed to increase the effectiveness of FMEA. So it can increase the precision of risk analysis and provide more information for design optimization.
