Hydrogen Generation Control of PEMFC Propulsion System for UAV

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) utilizing electric motors have various advantages and disadvantages. Electric motors are superior to internal combustion engines in thatthey are quiet and are free of unwanted vibrations. However, electric motors offer a shorter flight time due to the batterys low energy density. To solve this problem, various studies on fuel cells are currently in progress. NaBH4 solution used in this study is a chemical hydrogen storage which compounds NaBH4 to an alkali solution (H2O+NaOH). It produces hydrogen through hydrolysis reaction using chemical hydride as a catalyst. In addition to outstanding reaction characteristics it can control the hydrogen generation rate by small pump. A small hydrogen generation device is implemented to utilize NaBH4 solution and dead-end type PEMFC system, which was evaluated on the ground and by the flight.
