Experimental Studies on Separated Water-based Rocket Propulsion System
In order to prove the feasibility and advantages of water-based rocket propulsion system, a ground experimental system is built, and some preliminary experiments are conducted. The system mainly includes three relative independent subsystems: a 100W H2/O2 proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell subsystem, a 100W PEM water electrolysis subsystem, and a GH2/GO2 thruster subsystem. In the subsystem experiments, the subsystems of the fuel cell subsystem and the electrolysis cell subsystem work well. The gas consuming rate of the fuel cell subsystem and the gas generating rate of the electrolysis cell subsystem are obtained. It is indicated that the work efficiency of the electrolysis cell subsystem is lower than that of the fuel cell subsystem. The design scale of the electrolysis subsystem is not necessary to be the same as the fuel cell subsystem. A proper configuration of these subsystems should be sought according to their working time in a mission cycle and their work efficiency.
