Reaching Out to All Segments of Society: the Singapore Experience

We explore how the National Library Board, Singapore has extended its reach to the disadvantaged communities through innovative strategies. These communities include those faced with different social challenges, physical limitations and learning difficulties that restrict their use of libraries. As the Public Libraries Singapore(PLS) continues to develop its resources, programmes and services to meet the information needs of the nation today, concerted efforts have also been channeled to increase these communities awareness, access and use of the physical and digital library. Dedicated programming and outreach efforts include nation-wide programmes such as the Amazing Wheelchair Challenge, which aims to promote the wheelchair friendly libraries and services available, and special library events planned in conjunction with the annual International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Two other initiatives that will also be discussed in the paper are Project Deliver Me, and MOLLY(R), the Mobile Library, both of which were conceptualized and implemented to mobilize the library services effectively.
