The Development of Chinas Scholarly Publications in Library and Information Science, 1979-2009: an Analysis of ISI Literature
Research papers studying Chinas scientific performance in a variety of disciplines have been made increasingly available in ISI literature in recent years. In China, more and more papers researching Chinese scholarly publications in Library and Information Science have been published. However, so far no researchers have systematically studied the evolution and growth of Chinas scientific papers of library and information science published in English language and covered by ISI during the reform era. Intended to fill in the gap, this study examines library and information science papers authored by researchers of China and included in ISI literature during 1979 and 2009. By collecting and analyzing 30 years of ISI data, this paper, first, quantitatively presents the development of scholarly publications authored by researchers from China, including Taiwan and Hong Kong. Second, it explores, among others, the patterns and trends of papers authored by Chinese authors, particularly, it explores the top subject areas and top journals that Chinese papers are highly represented. Third and lastly, it makes international comparison between China and India in terms of library and information science research outputs represented in ISI literature.
