Serving the Multicultural Campus-How International Students Perceive Library Services

Along with the globalization of higher education, the number of international students studying at institutions in North America has been growing rapidly and steadily. How do international students perceive and use the libraries in North America? How well do libraries serve multicultural campuses? Studies have investigated international students interactions with and usage of libraries for the past forty years. However, the majority of studies were conducted ten years ago and address neither the characteristics of current students nor newer, innovative library services. In 2008/2009, the authors of this paper conducted original research on the usage and perceptions of library services of current undergraduates from China. The findings indicate that the impacts of language barriers and cultural differences on these students are not as dramatic as those identified by previous studies although students still have problems understanding library specific terminology. Students are well-informed about outreach services but remain unaware of many other library services. These students are a lot more likely to seek assistance from librarians when compared to findings in related literature. The paper has implications for Western academic libraries to more effectively meet the information needs of their international students.
