The Library as a Meeting Place in Different Urban Communities

Over the decade, public library research has had a strong focus on the public librarys role as meeting places in general and as arenas for community building in particular (see, for example, Audunson, 2005; Buschman, 2003; Fisher, Saxton, Edwards & Mai 2007; Goulding, 2005; McCabe, 2001). Recently focus has been particularly on the potential of public libraries for generating social capital which is regarded to be important for keeping communities together and avoid conflicts in a society becoming more and more multicultural. The research focus on the issue is paralleled by a similar focus by politicians as well as librarians. In a recent policy document from the Norwegian government on library politics, the public librarys role as a meeting place in the communities for literary activities and learning is a dominant theme. The research reported in this paper aims at contributing to that strand of research by eliciting how users in three branches of the public library network of Oslo-Norways capital-take the public library space into use.
