Knowledge is acquired through education, information, intelligence and experience, in academic institutions, with teachers and in libraries. Knowledge has always been the prime mover of prosperity and power. The acquisition of knowledge has therefore been the truth area throughout the world. The technology, information, forecasting and assessment council(TIFAC) task team has identified core areas that will spearhead our march towards becoming a knowledge society. The areas are information technology, biotechnology, space technology, weather forecasting, disaster management, tale-education technologies utilizing traditional knowledge. Now this is available by just in one click of mouse using information technology. Nowadays Indian universities the On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and CD-Rom are being frequently used based on IT sources and facilities. Internet and E-mail has become the most common among the internet-based technologies information is vital to everyday. Library and information science define information need, as that needs which library services or materials are intended to society. These needs may be grouped as a; (a) Social information need in day-to-day life, (b) professional information need, (c) Recreational information need and (d) Educational information need. A scientist spent most of his time in searching for information as science is ever growing. He needs different types of current information related to his field of specialization. This may be classified has current approach, every day approach and exhaustive approach, While designing information services, the basic requirements of the user have to be taken into account, as it will vary from one to the others.
