The Digital Library of the Public Library of Lyon: Project and strategy
In a multicultural context, it would be certainly risky to promote a universal assertion. However, I would dare say that all of us, as librarians in charge of precious collections, probably share the purpose of showing our heritage. As every library, the public Library of Lyon aims at showing its collections and finally at opening the shelves and making the public discover the collections. The exhibitions, the conferences, public presentations, publications are still an important way to show the collections, but also, the increasing importance of the Web cannot be ignored as a way to share our heritage to a larger public. The Public library of Lyon has started a program of development of a digital library. This program is a still a work in progress evolving every week. I propose to talk about the purposes and the evolution of this project in the library. I will start by introducing very briefly the library itself, and then the issues we have faced which explain the choices we made, and then I will introduce our plans themselves.
