Cloud Computing and Information Services: Issues Libraries are Facing

Cloud computing, as an emerging style of computing that involves various technologies and provides virtual and scalable IT-related services over the Internet, has become a popular topic in the past few years, especially in the IT and business enterprises. Much has been written about the concept of cloud computing and its applications in those fields, but very little has been done with cloud computing in the library setting. This paper first introduces cloud computing with respect to its concepts, its types, as well as its applications in businesses and the results of those applications. Besides providing an analytical overview of related literature on general cloud computing, the authors then focus on what cloud computing might mean to libraries and the areas within a library where cloud computing could play important roles. This paper explores the potential benefits of using cloud computing in library and information services, such as taking the pressure off libraries IT departments, promoting the creating and sharing of library digital assets, increasing collaboration and efficiency, and providing library-oriented mash-up web services for patrons and staff. It also points, out some concerns and challenges libraries may face when adopting the cloud computing model. The issues libraries need to deal with may include stability, data ownership, security, privacy, etc. While choosing cloud computing or not depends on each librarys own situation and decision, the authors believe that being aware of and keeping pace with information technology advancement would benefit library communities, facilitate library information management systems, and enhance information services to patrons.
