Assessing the Performance of the Chinese Strategic Trade Policies:Heterogenous Panel Analysis of the Trade Patterns of High technology Manufactures
This papers examines the effects of the Chinese export promoting strategic trade policies upon the comparative advantages of Chinese high technology manufactured products. I employ the measurement of net exports ratio to capture the relative strength of the strategic trade policies, and the measurement of revealed symmetric comparative advantage to reflect the comparative advantages. Using yearly panel data of 1992-2008, I identify a cointegrating relationship between the two measurements for the Chinese trade patterns. There is no evidence for the existence of short-run Granger causal relationship of either direction. However, the long-run Granger causality runs from revealed symmetric comparative advantage to net exports ratio. I argue that the Chinese strategic trade policies perform poorly in terms of comparative advantage improvements.
