The Burden of Disease in Shilin County 2003
Background: This study calculates the burden of disease (BOD) and injury carried out in rural Yunnan province, China. Disability-adjusted life years (DALY) is one of the perfect methods used to estimate BOD. Using DALY, the study aims to develop a method for evaluating BOD and to provide useful information for health planning for the residents in Shilin Yi Nationality Autonomous County (Shilin county). Methods: Methods developed for Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study by the World Bank and World Health Organization (WHO) were adapted and applied to Shilin county population health data. DALYs rate per 1,000 were calculated from medical death certificates in 2003 in Shilin county. The geographic coordinates of towns or townships were determined using the geocode function of the R2.3.1 geographical information system (GIS) software. Results: Respiratory diseases is by far the largest cause of years of life lost (YLL) in both males and females.The four other leading causes of YLL in descending order: unintentional injuries, cardiovascular diseases, intentional injuries, malignant neoplasms. But The five leading causes of years of lived with disability (YLD) in descending order: neuro-psychiatric conditions, intentional injuries, respiratory diseases, unintentional injuries, cardiovascular diseases. The leading causes of total disease burden (DALY) were neuro-psychiatric conditions. Townships of Muzhuqing and Xijiekou and Weize were serious disease burden areas in Shilin County. Conclusions: The prevention and treatment of neuro-psychiatric conditions and respiratory diseases for both female and male should be enhanced in Shilin county, and so as to decrease the injury. Prevention and intervention on non-infectious chronic diseases should be emphasized on remote townships.
