Empirical Study of the Relationship between Trade Structure of Imports and Technical Progress in China
According to new trade theory, imports facilitate economic growth through technology spillover, but the degree of spillover is related to trade structure. Indices of trade structure of imports and indices of technical progress are constructed at first. Then cointegration analysis and Granger causality test of the mutual effects between trade structure of imports of China and technical progress of China are carried out. The empirical study shows that the imports of capital goods and intermediate goods have a long-term stable stimulating effect to technical progress. Chinas imports gave rise to technology spillover, and the role played by the imports of intermediate goods is more significant, but mutual causal relationship does not exist between them, and there is not a sound circulation between trade structure improvement and technical progress. Some policy implications are given at the end.
