Empirical Study on the Environmental Kuznets Curve of Marine Economy in China

The environmental Kuznets hypothesis suggests that the indicator of environmental pollution increases to the vertex with the increase in revenue, and then declines as income rises. Based on the summarization of the documentations on environmental Kuznets curve (EKC for short) in and abroad, this paper establishes an empirical model to test the relationship between environmental change and marine economic development by using the panel data. The positive analysis shows that the conventional inverted U-shaped EKC could be used to describe the relationship between environmental change and economic development from the perspective of discharge of industrial waster water and the utilization of industrial solid wastes. While there are the linear curves from the perspective of industrial emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chemical oxygen demand. Therefore, the improvement of marine environmental quality needs the response of governmental policy, environmental investment and severely environmental laws, thus making a win-win situation happen for both marine economy and the environment as soon as possible.
