Ukrainian Chernozems: genesis, properties and amendment

Ukraine is rich in very productive chernozem soils, which are also environmentally tender and subject to various soil degradation. Forest -Steppe zone chernozems are the most fertile and ecologically stable soils, however, these soils are prone to soil erosion by water, degumification and are suffering from antropogenic soil acidity, and exchange calcium loss. Steppe chernozems frequently become moisture -deficient and irrigation is needed for economically feasible crop production. All chernozem soils in Ukraine, therefore, calls for minimum or restricted tillage, sufficient supply of organic matters, and systematic chemical amendments as a source of calcium.
