Black soils of the USA -A brief introduction
A Black Soil is a mineral soil where the dominant pedogenic mechanism was the creation of a thick, organic matter -rich dark -colored epipedon. Most Black Soils are naturally fertile. In the USA the majority of Black Soils are classified as Molli sols. Mollisols have mollic epipedons and high base saturation throughout the solum. They generally contain a significant content of weatherable mineral. In the strict sense, there are nine criteria defining the mollic epipedon with the details of the criteria varying in response to several other soil features (see Soil Survey Staff, 2010). In reality, mollic epipedons are quite straightforward. They are minerals horizons at least 25 cm thick having (a) structure, (b) moist color with both chroma and value both being 3 or less, and (c) at least 50% base saturation, and 0.6% organic carbon content.
