Recent spatial and temporal erosion of Iowa Mollisols
Degradation of Iowa mollisols can occur through soil fertility loss, soil structure degradation, soil organic matter depletion, and/or soil erosion. Of these, soil erosion is likely the most serious because eroded soil is normally replaced only through soil regeneration, a renewal process resulting in less than about 0. 5 ton/ha of new soil annually ( Montgomery, 2007 ). Humans affect soil erosion by making decisions a bout crop management and conservation practices. Recent science strongly suggests humans are also impacting erosion by affecting climate; in Iowa frequency of heavy rainstorms is increasing. The goal of this paper is to compare Iowa soil erosion rates to soil renewal rates and U. S. Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) i dentified tolerable soil erosion rates of 11 ton/(ha ? yr).
