Properties of Uruguayan Mollisols determine their classification, soil suitability and limitations
Mollisols are extensive soils in Uruguay but often associated to other soil types. They are dark colored, high in exchangeable bases and organic carbon ( SOC) and moderately acid to neutral, and thus their suitability for crops or pastures are usually high if not shallow to rock. The combination of a high natural fertility and a temperate humid climate results in a high potential for crops and pastures, even under a moderate technological level. However, these soils also have physical constraints that impose some limitations. Vertisols of Uruguay share important properties with Mollisols, and both Orders can be discussed together. Their properties and qualities are summarized in this presentation.
