Technology Risk Measurement in Complex Product Development
Complex product development is featured by high-technology, long period, high cost, and high risk. Therefore, early technology assessment is essential for decision-making in the product development project. In this paper, the regularity of technology development is discussed. We believe that technology development is a process of performance zigzagging, maturity growing, and uncertainty reduction. Assessing the state of technology developing requires considering 3 factors: technology capability, technology maturity, and product requirement. Therefore, based on TRL (Technology Readiness Level, being used to figure technology maturity or uncertainty), the concept of TRD (Technology Reliability Degree) is proposed. TRD is defined as the as-is probability of that the technology would satisfy the requirement by the end of the product development. TRD can be the base for such measurements as effort, schedule, quality, cost and risk. The method to measure technology risk based on TRD is proposed. Finally, the method iss demonstrated by the project of aircraft brake system development.
