Differences Between Open-ended and Dichotomous Choice Elicitation Technologies:A Case Study in Northwest China
Dichotomous choice and open-ended are two commonly used methods in contingent valuation (CVM). In this paper, both of the methods were used to elicit the farmers willingness to pay (WTP) for the irrigation water in Zhangye district, northwest China. We found the dichotomous choice yield higher WTP estimate than open-ended, but the difference is small, which argues for the convergent validity of the valuation exercise. Also, we found there may be yea-saying in dichotomous choice at lower bids, though there is no distinct difference in respondent behavior between the two elicitation methods.
