Preparation of Activated Carbon from Corn Cob by Na2CO3 Activation Using Microwave Radiation
This study presents the production of activated carbon from corn cob. Activated carbons were prepared with sodium carbonate activation by microwave radiation. The effect of different parameters, such as microwave radiation time and Na2CO3/corn cob ratio on the yield and adsorption capacities of activated carbons were discussed. It indicated that the optimal conditions were as follow: microwave power460W;microwave radiation time 9min; Na2CO3/corn cob ratio 2.5:1. Iodine number and the yield of activated carbon prepared under optimal conditions were 1199.12 mg/g and 31.5%, respectively. The surface properties of the activated carbon under optimal conditions were investigated by BET surface area, totale volume, mesopore volum pore size distribution (PSD) and SEM,Under the optimal conditions, the BET surface area was 24.7m2/g, totale volume was 0.026041 cm3/gand the mesopores accounted for 80%. The advantages of the method described were easy and feasible.
