Ramulus dnnamomi (L.) inhibit matrix metalloproteinase activities and the motility of HT1080 cells
Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) have been widely used and achieved great success in Chinese clinic. However, the therapeutic mechanism was mostly unclear. Ramulus Cinnamomi is used in many TCM formulations for the treatment of arthralgia or numbness of the extremities, relieving phlegm, amenorrhea and menorrhagia. To examine the biological activities of Ramulus Cinnamomi on a molecular level, we investigated the inhibition of Ramulus Cinnamomi extracts against matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The water extract of Ramulus Cinnamomi was prepared followed by several organic solvent extractions. The primery water extract, n-butyl alcohol extract and final water extract can effectively inhibit MMP-2, MMP-9 and MMP-16 activities, and the inhibitory effect of n-butyl alcohol extract selectivity to MMP-9. Further experiments confirm N-butyl alcohol extract and final water extract also inhibit the migration of HT1080 cells. These results indicate the therapeutic mechanism of Ramulus Cinnamomi may involve the inhibition of MMPs.
