The Impact of Economic Rent on Crisis Management:The Case of a Small Subcontractor

This paper is concerned with the impact of economic rent on SMEs agility to build resilience and stand up to crises. It is often argued that SMEs are chronically short of financial assets to spend on training and risk management. While acknowledging that the paper argues that they have tremendous intrinsic resources to rely on and compensate for the shortage of financial resources. Moreover, it is shown by studying a particular case that the availability of money does not necessarily contribute to the ability of SMEs to command resilience. By examining the perception of more than forty employees through questionnaires and interviews it is argued that reliance on economic rent can have negative consequences on a SMEs preparedness for crisis -more or less similar to the tardiness of rentier states that rely on resource rent and lose vitality in preparing for the day when the resource rent diminishes.
