The Characteristics of Patent Activities and the Enterprises Demand for Patent Protection: A Survey of 287 Enterprises in Zhejiang Province
Based on a survey of 287 enterprises in Zhejiang province, this paper analyzes the characteristics of patent activities, the relationship between patent activities and technological innovation of Zhejiang enterprises, and the enterprises demand for patent protection. The data analysis reveals that the patent-based enterprises consisted of a large proportion in the survey. The patent activities of these enterprises can be characterize d into four aspects: (1) They take an active patent application for new products. (2) The patented products bring higher profits and stronger market influence to the enterprise, but the benefit is mainly from the technological superiority rather than patent monopoly. (3) Limited by the technology development level, most of the enterprises make use of patents defense functions rather than market monopoly or offensive functions. (4) The enterprises patent management is gradually institutionalized and standardized. The patent-based enterprises are active and effective in patent management. They also have patent stratey, as well as strong patent protection motivation. 94. 4％ of enterprises under study believe that the strengthening of patent protection has a positive role in promoting enterprises to increase R&D investment and to decrease imitation.
