Co-evolution of Innovation Capability and Open Innovation: Experience from Chinese Firms
Open innovation is thought as a strategy to improve competitiveness and innovation capability. However, research on the relationship between open innovation and innovation capability is still scarce. Based on a case study and archived analyses, we argue that open innovation in China has distinguished characteristics, which is not the open innovation defined by Ches brough and others. We propose two stages of implementation of open innovation strategy in China, from the knowledge in sourcing stage to knowledge in-& out-sourcing stage. We also hypothesize that the implementation of open innovation strategy in Chinese firms is a development process with the growth of innovation capability of firms. It is a co-evolution process of implementation of open innovation strategy and growth of innovation capability.
