Study on Cutting temperature for Wood Plastic Composite
As natural forest resources continuously reduce and wood production are necessary for the life of people today,it needs urgent consideration to promote high efficiency utilization of wood materials, such as maximizing the use of wood products, pursuing high value-added products, developing circular economy and building a conservation-minded community as well.Based on the above, one new type of wood-plastic composite (WPC) materials has been developed rapidly and used widely to replace wood production in recent years. Cutting process of wood-plastic material is the key to directly affect the efficiency of utilization and processing, however the study of the effects from several cutting parameters of wood-plastic materials on cutting temperature has not been reported internationally until now.The infra-red thermal imaging system and computer numerical control (CNC) machine were used in this study to analyze cutting temperature under the different cutting parameters, which was further compared with wood cutting procedure to provide theoretical basis for wood-plastic material processing. And then the major conclusion was summarized as follows: 1. During cutting, cutting temperature rised when cutting depth, spindle speed, and cutting width increased. Cutting depth was the most important factor on cutting temperature, followed by spindle speed, and cutting width least affected it Once feed rate went up, cutting temperature was reduced on a small scale. Cutting operation performed repeatedly with small cutting depth, small cutting width, appropriately low spindle speed and rather high feed rate could keep cutting temperature lower than wood-plastic softening point, and finally made good quality of cutting surface for wood-plastic material. 2. Under the same cutting conditions, cutting friction coefficient of wood is larger than that of wood-plastic material, because massoniana wood has an uneven texture and far more fiber content than wood-plastic material. Thus, cutting temperature for massoniana wood is higher than wood-plastic material. Regardless of this, the changing trends of their cutting temperatures are similar. 3. Shear heat moderately affected the cutting temperature during cutting. The temperatures of cutting tools would increase, which were friction heat mainly from the front heat source area of cutter flank face to the rear one.
