Development of milling tools with extreme inclination angle for planing of wood

Some years ago at Technische Universitat Dresden (TUD) there was an idea 1, 2 to avoid a lot of noises using a tool with a helix oriented edge for solid wood milling.Investigations have shown that noise pressure levels of up to 10 dB(A) can be avoided easily in comparison to conventional milling tools with the principle of extreme inclination angle.Furthermore it was supposed to save energy when using an optimised cutter head in planing machines. Besides the basics and the status of research of the new kind of tool the paper shows the effects of extreme inclination angles s on the noise emissions, the cutting power consumption and the chip flow when milling different species of wood with varied chip thicknesses. An optimal configuration of the tool was found and currently construction and maintenance issues are discussed for practical use and production for the market.
