Assessment of sanded surfaces using VDI guideline 4314
The assessment of sanded surfaces is still not resolved in a satisfying way for wood as well as for engineered wood products. A workgroup in Germany is currently working on a guideline for the assessment of such surfaces. The properties to be assessed are pure mechanical ones like roughness, waviness and tolerances as well as chemical /physical ones like colour, adhesion, penetrability etc. The paper presents the current status of this project and gives an overview of the different assessment methods and their parameters for wood or wood based panels. The methods have to be able to deal with the inhomogeneous and anisotropic character of wood-surfaces, and with their natural structure.Moreover the methods need to be economically feasible,which depends in turn on the field of application. Therefore the guideline will not only suggest high-tech solutions but also present standard procedures based on personal observation which are standardized and open to application for not so well equipped users.
