Chip Formation in Longitudinal (90-0) Cutting of Bamboo
Orthogonal cutting experiments were conducted to study the chip formation in longitudinal cutting (90-0) of bamboo. Laminated bamboo composites were fabricated for the cutting experiments. Piezoelectric pressure sensors were used to measure the cutting forces, and the cutting processes were imaged using CCD camera. Chip formation and the cutting forces under different cutting depths, bamboo moisture contents (MC) and knife rake angles were analyzed. It was found that three types of chips can be formed in 90-0 cutting. A cantilever beam model was adopted to describe the chip formation in 90-0 cutting, from which chip types were predicted from the measured cutting forces.
