Prosodic Pattern of Engagement in TV News Interview
Based on Martins Appraisal Theory, in particular, the subsystem of engagement, with the help of Systemic Coder, through the quantitative statistics and interpretive analysis of the engagement resources in 25 texts of CCTV 9 interview program Dialogue, the present article is an attempt to find out the engagement features in TV news interview. It is found that there are both similarities and differences in engagement in each part of the interview, including the narrative part, the questioning part and the answering part. Furthermore, constrained by the register and generic characteristics of TV news interview, the interaction of the engagement features in each part forms the prosodic pattern throughout the whole TV news interview. And the appropriate uses of the engagement resources can help to open the space for interaction, to put effective questions and to establish the authority of the guests. It is hoped that this research can provide insights for the study of news interview discourse.
