An Appraisal Analysis of Interviewers Evaluations of Job Applicants

This paper explores the language used by interviewers when discussing job applicants and their performances in the course of their job interviews. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics Appraisal theory, it examines a set of authentic job interviews in French, or French and English. The interview analyses are complemented by the job applicants comments on their interviews. The analysis revealed an evaluative stance that is overwhelmingly positive and favorable to candidates, while the post-interview data showed candidates favorable reaction and alignment to their interviewers positive appraisal.
