Surface properties of excilamp-treated meta-aramid fabrics

Poly-metaphenylene isophthalamide (or meta-aramid) fabrics were irradiated with a Xe2* excilamp (λ=172 nm) at atmospheric pressure. Surface properties of the irradiated meta-aramid fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and wettability measurements. The results showed that a rougher surface was appeared and more photo-oxidized carbon functional groups were formed on the surface of the excilamp-treated fiber, and the surface wettability of the treated fabrics improved obviously with UV irradiation time increasing. Excilamp treatment imparted the meat-aramid fiber a rougher and polar activation surface.
