Study on the application of chitosan for natural dyes dyeing on cotton fabrics

Chitosan had the high content of primary amino groups and the cotton fiber was modified by chitosan to improve the dyeing performance of natural dyes. The optimal modifying process was studied and the dyeing properties such as K/S value and color fastness were investigated. FTIR, TGA and SEM were applied to analyze the functional group, thermodynamics performance and surface appearance. As a result, it was found that chitosan enhanced the dye-uptake of natural dyes and increased natural dyes sorption on cotton fabric. Natural dyes showed favorable dyeing performance on cotton fabric modified by chitosan. The ultraviolet protective properties of the dyed cotton were evaluated. It was found that the dyed cotton had good UV-protection ability.
