Research on Sparse Topology Control Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

Connectivity and sparseness are important topological property for wireless sensor networks(WSN). Under battlefield environments sensor nodes are deployed randomly and intensively, which lead to the density and complexity of network topology. Aim at reducing communication interference between each node and saving energy consumption, this paper proposes an optimized sparse network topology control algorithm which the degree and betweenness of node are considered comprehensively. The algorithm restricts the numbers of connected edges for each node by deleting some redundant links. In wireless sensor network, nodes with small betweenness play less important role in the process of information transmission, so the link between them can be deleted. The sparseness of the network is materialized and at the same time the network’s connectivity is guaranteed. The simulation results indicate that this method can reduce the density of edges effectively and simplify the network structure while it has negligible effect on the average shortest path length. It is beneficial to reduce energy consumption and improve the performance of network.
