Result of An Internet-Based Telecare Program in Taiwan
Todays aging population is a global phenomenon -the skyrocketing costs of healthcare and the shortage of healthcare providers will soon become a crucial issue. Taiwans government operated the Taiwans Telehealth Pilot Project (TTPP) from July 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. The goal was to use healthcare information technology to solve the problems listed above. The system focused on three different models, including the residential care model, the community care model, and the home care model to assist the elderly in the pursuit of better healthcare and improved quality of life. The results revealed that these three telehealth care models helped to control healthcare costs and improve quality. They helped reduce the readmission rate and minimize the likelihood of adverse drug events in the residential care models, while facilitating timely medical responses in the home care and community care contexts. Even though the results of this study were encouraging, the future funding of telehealth will still be an issue if the fiscal barriers cannot be overcome. Telehealth could enable aged people with chronic illnesses to live independently and may assist the institutionalized elderly in getting access to acute care more efficiently, therefore reducing the costs and improve the quality of care.
