A Permeability Simulation Method Using Cholesky Decomposition

The permeability is an important parameter for the evaluation of transport properties in many scientific and engineering fields. However, it is quite difficult to predict the unknown permeability information only by some sparse data in the process of interpolation. Cholesky decomposition is introduced in the simulation and prediction of permeability distributiop. The advantage is that this decomposition only needs to be performed once, multiple realizations are generated at the cost of a mere matrix multiplication. The major drawback is that, even if done only once, it is a very costly operation for large matrix and thus should be restricted to small fields and data sets. The simulation using Cholesky decomposition is the equivalent of the sequential Gaussian simulation algorithm with simple kriging and with an infinite data search neighborhood; all original conditioning data and previously simulated values are used in the kriging system at every node along the simulation path. The experimental results demonstrate that this method is practical.
