Wireless Sensor Networks for Parking Guidance and Information System

During last two decades, the car ownership in China is growing tremendously, the parking problem in big cities, especially the mega-cities, has become one of the key causes of the city traffic congestion. The Parking Guidance and Information System (PGIS) is considered to be an effective way to improve parking situation. Unfortunately, a large number of the parking facilities have not applied the PGIS, and so some reconstruction work must be done to realize this system. However, it is not so convenient for the current parking facilities to be equipped with the cabled-based parking guidance system because the reconstruction encumbers the operation of the parking facilities. In this paper, the wireless sensor network (WSN) for PGIS is presented to solve this problem. WSN-based PGIS can be designed more freely without much change on the existing building, and can be easily compatible with the existing PGIS. For this system, the parking vehicles are detected by the ultrasonic sensors, and the sensor nodes communicate with each other by WSN. The system will process the data and then publish the information of parking vehicles by GPRS. And the data of test show that the sensor nodes and the network are fully able to meet the requirements.
